Introduction

Civil Engg. department is the oldest department of MIT, Muzaffarpur. This institute was started with only Civil Engg. department in the beginning. Other departments were added latter on. Being the oldest department of MIT, Civil engineering enjoys the privilege of world class laboratories and highly qualified faculty members. The teachers of the department are engaged in active research and have successfully guided M.Sc. Engg. and Ph.D. students. The teachers of the development have taken up consultancy and testing work related to Civil Engg. Projects outside departments and have contributed large amounted of money to college testing fund from the testing and consultation work. The activity helps to improve the abilities of teachers and students as well.

IGNOU programme of advanced diploma on water resources and management and advanced diploma in construction management are being run with the help of Civil Engg. department. Part time P.G. programme is also run by the department.

Laboratories

The college has well equipped laboratories which are: -

(I) Material testing lab.
(II) Cement Concrete lab.
(III) Soil Mechanics lab.
(IV) Hydraulics lab.
(V) Geo-Mechanics lab.
(VI) Environmental Engg. lab.
(VII) Highway lab.

Material testing and cement concrete lab are the only labs in Bihar, which are recognized as standard labs and perform various tests for many projects of the state. Material testing lab. have got universal testing machine, Wood testing machine, Tensile testing machine ,(compressive strength testing machine, Brinell's Hardness testing machine.
In the addition the faculty have got all th4 modern surveying instruments like theodilite, dumilevel, prismetic compass, surveyors compass and so many others. Students are trained in laying out practice of buildings, bridges, transition curves, chain survey, and plane table survey, profile leveling, astronomical survey in the guidance of highly qualified professors.
The institute has hot a special cell for the research of foundation Engg. where the students in guidance of professors are trying hard to design the foundation, which can economically satisfy the needs of the soil of various region of the country. Recently they have developed a special design, which can resist seismic shocks.
This is the only institute of the state, which has water resource and flood control research centre. It is will equipped and has no. of computers connected with internet. Every year many seminars are organized by this department over this topic and many Emanuel scholars are invited from all over the country. On this occasion the outcome of research work are explained with this aid of projects and computers. This research centre have proved to be an asset of this flood affected state, which faces the over of its rivers every year.
Geo-Mechanics lab:-
It is in fact a well-decorated museum having ample collection of minerals, rocks, and gem stones, fossils. The lab has many models, which are helpful in the study of crystal and molecular structures of minerals. For the study of temp. effects, the lab has micro- wave ovens. In this lab students are made familiar with rocks and mineral and are guided to study the physical chemical and optical properties of minerals and rocks. The students are also trained in geological map study .
Hydraulics lab: - This lab has got the facility for the study of venturimeter, turbine, V-notch, viscous flows (Hollow show apparatus), Bernoulli's setup, impact of jet, jet Propulsion, Meta-centric height of ship models, hydrostatic forces on dames and slice gates.
