History:-

After the slavery of nearly two centuries when our country got independence, our economy was in wretched position. The builders of the nation realized the necessity of rapid industrialization of the country. For boosting it, facilities for technical education was essential and hence engineering institutions started coming up throughout the country in fifties. M.I.T. came into existence in the mean time at the biggest & the most important city of north Bihar 'MUZAFFARPUR' on 25th September 1954. It was inaugurated by Sri C.P.N. Sinha, the then governor of East Punjab. Initially it was started with single branch -Civil Engineering with a batch of 45 students as 1954-55 batch. On 21st April 1956 the first prime minister of India Pd. Jawaharlal Nehru laid down the foundation stone of main building. Electrical & Mechanical branches were added from session 1960-61. Presently it is providing degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Electronics, Information Technology, Leather technology & Pharmacy.

Location:-

This Institute is located at the north-west corner of the Muzaffarpur city along Muzaffarpur- Motihari road, spread over an area of 55 acres at a distance of about 4 kilometers from Muzaffarpur junction. The institute is flanked by the holy river "Boorhi Gandak" on north, a quite big water reservoir on the east, Muzaffarpur-Motihari road on south and local road network on west.

Environment:-

The weather condition is pleasant with minimum temperature variation between 5 to 10 degree centigrade and rainfall of about 100cms. The campus has unique location in the sense that it enjoys all the amenities of the city & the inmates are almost free from the adverse menace of environmental pollution.

Administration :-

The institution is under the direct administrative control of the Department of Science & Technology, Govt. of Bihar. On local basis, there is a local body for the institution with the Commissioner, Tirhut division as ex-official-chairman, Principal M.I.T. as secretary and members representing various fields of the society to provide guidance and supervision etc. for the institute administration as per necessity. Faculty members and supporting staff contribute significantly in institute administration by successfully discharging the assignments given to them by the principal or his representative.

UNIVERSITY:-

The Institute is academically governed on local level by the B. R. Ambedkar Bihar university, Muzaffarpur which is the degree awarding authority for the institute as bachelor and master of engineering. The principal of the institute happens to be the dean of the faculty of engineering as per university stature.
