Patna, (Bihar Times): Six new engineering colleges are going to start their classes from the current academic session (2008-09). While classes are to start in Darbhanga, Gaya and Motihari engineering colleges soon, three other colleges are coming up at Chandi in Nalanda district, Sitamarhi and Madhepura.
It needs to be mentioned that private engineering colleges came up at Gaya, Darbhanga and Motihari in late 1980s but they all got closed after a couple of years. Now the state government has taken over them.
The state government claims that by the next academic session of 2009-10 Bihar will have 20 government engineering colleges. The candidates would be selected hrough Bihar Combined Competitive Engineering Entrance Test.
At present these six newly set up colleges will have only three branches: Computer, Mechanical and Electronics and Communication. Each branch will have 60 seats, thus in that way 180 students would be admitted in each colleges every year.
At present Bihar has two government engineering colleges at Muzaffarpur and Bhagalpur, besides the Indian Insitute of Technology and National Institute of Technology. Apart from that there are some private engineering colleges, including Maulana Azad College of Engineering and Technology and Patna Institute of Technology, both situated in the state capital.
Though the minister of science and technology, Shahid Ali Khan, while talking to a Patna-based daily claimed that the creation of engineering colleges would check the flow of students outside the state the truth is that the situation of the government engineering colleges is far from satisfactory. Not only are the old ones facing faculty crisis complaints of session delay is quite rampant. Due to one and a half months long strike by the non-teaching staff the functioning of these colleges had greatly been affected. The irony is that the state government has decided to appoint faculties for these colleges on contractual basis. The other problem with the state government’s decision is that most of these engineering colleges are coming up in non-descript towns with hardly any infrastructure. In such a situation it is not easy to get good teachers.
However, to get rid of the problems caused by strike and other such hurdles the state government has planned to set up Aryabhatt Knowledge University so that all technical institutes of the state would come under it.
