Introduction
Civil Engg. department is the oldest department of MIT, Muzaffarpur. This institute
was started with only Civil Engg. department in the beginning. Other departments
were added latter on. Being the oldest department of MIT, Civil engineering enjoys
the privilege of world class laboratories and highly qualified faculty members.
The teachers of the department are engaged in active research and have successfully
guided M.Sc. Engg. and Ph.D. students. They have also taken up consultancy and testing
work related to Civil Engg. Projects and have contributed big amount of money to
college testing fund. The activity helps to improve the abilities of teachers and
learning for students.
IGNOU programme of advanced diploma on water resources and management and advanced
diploma in construction management are running with the help of Civil Engg. department.
Part time P.G. programme is also undertaken by the department.
Laboratories
The various laboratories under this department are as follows:-
- Material testing lab.
- Cement Concrete lab.
- Soil Mechanics lab.
- Hydraulics lab.
- Geo-Mechanics lab.
- Environmental Engg. lab.
- Highway lab.
Material testing and cement concrete lab are the only labs in Bihar, which are recognized
as standard labs and perform various tests for many projects of state. Material
testing lab. have got universal testing machine, Wood testing machine, Tensile testing
machine, compressive strength testing machine, Brinell's Hardness testing machine.
In the addition, department has all the modern surveying instruments like theodilite,
dumilevel, prismetic compass, surveyors compass and many more. Students are trained
in laying out practice of buildings, bridges, transition curves, chain survey, and
plane table survey, profile leveling and astronomical survey in the guidance of
highly qualified professors.
The institute has got a special cell for the research of foundation engg. where
the students in guidance of professors are trying hard to design the foundation,
which can economically satisfy the needs of the soil of various region of the country.
Recently they have developed a special design, which can resist seismic shocks.
MIT is the only institute in Bihar, which has water resource and flood control research
centre. It is well equipped and has good no. of computers connected with internet
with latest softwares. Every year many seminars are organized by this department
over related topics and reknowned scholars are invited from all over the country.
On the occasion, the outcomes of research work are presented and explained. This
research centre have proved to be an asset for the flood affected state.
Geo-Mechanics lab:-
It is in fact a well-decorated museum having ample collection of minerals, rocks,
and gem stones, fossils, etc. The lab has many models, which are helpful in the
study of crystal and molecular structures of minerals. For the study of temperature
effects, the lab has micro- wave ovens. In this lab, students are made familiar
with rocks and mineral and are guided to study the physical, chemical and optical
properties of minerals and rocks. The students are also trained in geological map
study .
Hydraulics lab: -
This lab has got the facility for the study of venturimeter, turbine, V-notch, viscous
flows (hollow show apparatus), Bernoulli's setup, impact of jet, jet Propulsion,
meta-centric height of ship models, hydrostatic forces on dames and slice gates,
etc.
