Spic Macay
SPIC MACAY, the Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth, a voluntary and non-profit movement, was started in 1977 by Dr. Kiran Seth to promote Indian Culture amongst youth.
The big bang of SPIC MACAY came in 1972 at a concert of Ustad Aminuddin Dagar and Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York. The idea took a more defined direction in 1977 in India. In early 1978, a concert of the Dagar Bandhu was held at IIT Delhi. In 1979, a two-day programme was again held at IIT Delhi of Ustad Bismillah Khan, Dagar Bandhu, Ustad Amjad Khan and Ustad Shahid Parvez. It was in this programme that the name SPIC MACAY was launched and the aim expressed was not to fight westernization but the process of deculturization, sensitivity, mindfulness, and cultural awareness alongside rigorous technical education.

The establishment of the SPIC MACAY MIT Heritage Club marks a vital step toward achieving that holistic balance within our academic community.
In an increasingly fast-paced world, Indian classical arts, folk traditions, and indigenous crafts offer timeless lessons in discipline, patience, mindfulness, and creative thinking. Rooted in the founding vision of SPIC MACAY and the venerable Guru-Shishya Parampara, our chapter aims to bring master practitioners and living legends directly to our campus. Through lecture-demonstrations, live concerts, and immersive workshops, we seek to cultivate aesthetic sensitivity, celebrate India’s diverse intangible heritage, and provide students with a deeply grounding experience.
I encourage every student to actively participate, volunteer, and engage with the activities of this club. May this platform inspire you to explore the rich cultural tapestry of our nation while striving for excellence in your professional endeavours.
